Pnm-19: Residential Exposure to Carbon Monoxide and Spontaneous Abortion
نویسندگان
چکیده مقاله:
Background: The relationship between air pollution exposure and adverse birth outcomes such as low birth weight and IUGR was studied. However, very few studies evaluated the effect of air pollution emissions on spontaneous abortion. We examined association between spontaneous abortion of the first trimester of pregnancy and ambient concentrations of carbon monoxide in Tehran. Materials and Methods: This study is a case-control research that was conducted on 148 spontaneous abortion (case group) and 148 pregnant women (control group). Samples were collected randomly from 10 hospitals in Tehran between June 2010 to February 2011,and the correlation between spontaneous abortion and carbon monoxide as an environmental pollutant was investigated. Results: There were no significant difference in age, their husbands' age, age at the first childbirth, educational level, previous delivery type and the interval between deliveries, experience of any previous abortion, body mass index, parity, average income of the family, duration of residence in Tehran and the amount of time spent at work and outside of the home between the two groups (p>0.05). The mean of environmental carbon monoxide concentration in case group (4.09 ± 2.09 PPM) was significantly higher than control group (2.81 ± 1/07PPM) in t test (p<0.001), and also the rate of abortion was 1.98 times higher in these areas (CI95% 1.55 - 2.53). For assessing the relationship between gestational age and environmental carbon monoxide concentration linear regression technique was used. Results indicated that there was a negative correlation between these variables. Conclusion: Findings of this study showed that there is a significant relationship between Occurrence of spontaneous abortion and the environmental carbon monoxide concentration. Further research is needed to confirm these results and possibly elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the finding.

Residential Exposure to Traffic and Spontaneous Abortion
BACKGROUND Studies have shown associations between air pollution or traffic exposure and adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight. However, very few studies have examined the effect of traffic emissions on spontaneous abortion (SAB). OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to determine whether residential exposure to vehicular traffic was associated with SAB. METHODS Pregnant women fro...
متن کاملPnm-18: Maternal Exposure to Ozone, Nirogen Dioxide, Sulfur Dioxide and Spontaneous Abortion
Background: Adverse pregnancy outcomes (low birth weight, prematurity and intrauterine growth retardation) are associated with exposure to urban air pollution. Experimental data have also shown that such exposure elicits adverse reproductive outcomes. We examined association between spontaneous abortion of the first trimester of pregnancy and ambient concentrations of Ozone, Nirogen Dioxide and...
متن کاملOccupational Exposure to pesticides and spontaneous abortion among female pistachio farmers: a case-control study
Introduction: The majoritiy of abortion risk factors has been classified as environmental and vary from one place to another. This study aimed to explore the relationship between exposure to pesticides and spontaneous abortion among female pistachio farmers in Rafsanjan, Iran. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, 50 women with spontaneous abortion and 50 women w...
متن کاملUnstable angina and exposure to carbon monoxide.
Inhalation of small amounts of carbon monoxide diminishes the pain threshold in patients with stable angina pectoris. The aim of this study was to identify and describe patients who had been exposed unknowingly to toxic inhalations of this gas and subsequently presented to hospital with a clinical picture of unstable angina. Blood carboxyhaemoglobin levels of 104 patients referred with unstable...

CONTEXT Although morbidity and mortality from accidental carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning are high in the United States, identification of common but poorly recognized sources should help prevention efforts. OBJECTIVE The study aimed to describe CO poisoning of home occupants due to a vehicle left running in an attached garage. DESIGN News stories reporting incidents of US CO poisoning were c...
متن کاملPnm-20: The Impact of Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Particulate Matter on Spontaneous Abortion
Background: Epidemiological evidence suggests that fine particulate air pollution, particularly particles less than 10 microns in diameter (PM10) exposure adversely affects pregnancy outcomes and usually aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene bound to fine particles. We evaluated the impacts of PM10 and benzene on spontaneous abortion of first trimester of pregnancy in Tehran. Materials and Meth...
